MANN+HUMMEL Recognized by General Motors as a 2018 Supplier of the Year

Detroit/Ludwigsburg, Germany, June 07 2019 – MANN+HUMMEL was named a Supplier of the Year by General Motors during their 27th annual ‘Supplier of the Year’ awards ceremony held in Detroit in May. It is the 24th time MANN+HUMMEL has received the award.

More than half of the suppliers are repeat winners from 2017. The Supplier of the Year award winners were chosen by a global team of GM purchasing, engineering, quality, manufacturing and logistics executives. Winners were selected based on performance criteria in Product Purchasing, Global Purchasing and Manufacturing Services, Customer Care and Aftersales, and Logistics.

GM recognized 133 of its best suppliers from 15 countries that have consistently exceeded GM’s expectations, created outstanding value or introduced innovations to the company.

New Thomson Online Selection Tool Simplifies Linear Bearing Specification and Purchase

05.30.2019 – RADFORD, VA – Thomson Industries, Inc., a leading manufacturer of mechanical motion control solutions, has announced availability of an online tool that streamlines the selection and purchase of linear bearings. This addition to the Thomson website enables design engineers and system integrators to zero in on the right bearings for their applications in mere minutes.

“Linear bearings, including Linear Ball Bushing® bearings, are among our most popular products, and we want to be sure that our customers can find what they need in the way that is most efficient for them,” said Charles Isaac, Product Line Manager – Linear Bearings and Guides at Thomson. “After interviewing numerous bearing users, we found that an increasing number want to buy online, and when they do, they expect the same ease of use they get from retail sites like Amazon. We created this new capability in close collaboration with those customers, and our continued testing shows high acceptance.”

Streamlining bearing selection

The process begins with the selection of “Linear Ball Bushing Bearings” from the visual, application-based product menu on the Thomson home page ( This returns images of main bearing types, including open or closed plain bushings, open or closed pillow block bushings, flanges and roller bearings. Selecting a bushing type reveals a set of four images on which users click to designate standard, corrosive, washdown or high-temperature operating conditions. This choice reveals a single table showing all available dimensions, load capacities and part numbers. To narrow their search even further, users can take advantage of real-time adjustments as defined by filter parameters  ̶  all without leaving the page. Additionally, the online tool provides an enhanced shopping experience with up-front pricing and lead times for all bearings, and suggests accurately sized, related products such as shafting and supports based on search results.

The process typically takes less than five minutes and yields an optimized list of bearings that meet the application requirements. Once the user chooses one, they can either add it to a shopping cart for immediate purchase, download a 3D model into their CAD program or download a PDF containing additional details on the product features, benefits and technical specifications. The new linear bearing selection tool is part of Thomson’s initiative focused on enhancing its interactive engineering environment and user experience. Omron Helps University of Houston Engineering Students Gain Real-World Skills with New Design and Robotics Laboratory

Omron Foundation, the charitable arm of the U.S.-based operations of industrial automation solutions provider Omron, donated a new laboratory complete with workstations and state-of-the-art equipment to give University of Houston students the opportunity to prepare for real-world engineering challenges.

Hoffman Estates, IL., May 29, 2019 – The University of Houston’s Cullen College of Engineering recently unveiled a cutting-edge laboratory donated by the Omron Foundation, the charitable arm of automation solutions provider Omron in the United States. Designed for electrical and computer engineering students, the lab includes advanced technologies and equipment donated by Omron.

At the lab’s opening ceremony, UH faculty and Omron representatives looked at a variety of senior capstone projects, including a sorting robot and a mobile robotic billboard. The lab contains an area dedicated to senior design projects, which provides real world design experience, which is helpful for gaining employment after graduation.

“Prospective employers will expect them to speak intelligently about what they worked on for their design project so the experience they gain at this stage is very important,” says Len Trombetta, the associate department chair. “This makes our graduates very marketable because these are skills companies want. We’re grateful to Omron for making this possible.”

Omron Automation Americas President, CEO and COO Robb Black described the importance of preparing today’s students for the latest challenges in engineering and manufacturing. “We want to bring the skills they have learned in school into the manufacturing sector,” says Black. “I think it’s a great way for students to learn real-world technology and apply it once they leave.”

Omron Foundation has been supporting the Cullen College’s electrical and computer engineering students since 2010, when it established the Omron Scholarship in electrical engineering and sponsored a team of students applying their engineering knowledge to real-world industry problems in the Capstone Design course. Gear Manufacturers Association Partners with Chicago College to Establish Training Center

The American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) has signed a partnership agreement with Richard J. Daley College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, officially establishing the first AGMA National Training Center. The center will provide engineering and operator-level continuing education for all aspects of gear manufacturing.

The 10,000-square-foot facility will have the capacity to train more than 600 students per year, covering a variety of topics, from basic gear making to gear failure analysis. In addition to those already in the gear industry, students enrolled in the college’s manufacturing or engineering programs will be able to participate in the program.

“The National Training Center and the partnership with Daley College will allow us to achieve a significant education milestone for AGMA,” says AGMA President Matthew E. Croson. “The education of our workforce has been a primary mission of AGMA for decades, and we are recognized for our efforts on a global scale. The AGMA National Training Center at Daley College will enhance our reputation while delivering a world-class facility with the equipment, tools and knowledge transfer that will be required to ensure the gear manufacturing industry has its fair share of skilled labor.”

Since 38% of the gear industry supplier base is said to be based in the Chicago area, the training center is expected to significantly reduce travel costs for companies in the local area.

Longtime Ed Carpenter Racing Partner Moves to Team Owner’s No. 20 for the First Time
(INDIANAPOLIS) April 23, 2019 – Preferred Freezer Services announced today a continuation of their partnership with Ed Carpenter Racing for a sixth consecutive year. New for 2019, the only owner/driver in the NTT IndyCar Series will be behind the wheel of a blue and white Preferred Freezer Services car for the first time. Ed Carpenter’s No. 20 Chevrolet will showcase the classic colors and famous Preferred Freezer Services polar bear at the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 26, 2019.
Preferred Freezer Services (PFS), a global leader in the cold storage, warehousing, distribution and logistics industry, first teamed up with Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR) to field a second car for the team in the 2014 Indianapolis 500. The company has supported ECR’s Month of May program each year since, serving as primary partner on six entries for the 500-mile race over the past five years. Of those six entries, four have yielded Top 10 finishes, including a 3rd place in 2016. Last year, full-time ECR driver Spencer Pigot started a Preferred Freezer Services Chevrolet on the outside of the second row after making the prestigious Fast Nine Shootout during qualifying.
Carpenter is honored to have the opportunity to make his 16th Indianapolis 500 start in the No. 20 Preferred Freezer Services Chevrolet. “Preferred Freezer Services, along with DEEM, has been an amazing partner of ECR over the years,” remarked Carpenter. “I have always thought that the bold blue livery stood out and looked fast on track. I can’t wait to represent Preferred Freezer, DEEM, SMC and all of their employees at the Indianapolis 500.”
While Carpenter now races exclusively at the oval events, he remains one of the most experienced drivers in the NTT IndyCar Series field with over 175 career starts. In 2018, he became just the 10th driver to collect three or more Indianapolis 500 pole positions in the century-plus history of the race. When Carpenter took the green flag from the coveted first starting position, 2018 became the 11th season in a row that he has led at least one Indy car race. The Indianapolis native went on to lead the most laps of all drivers (65) on his way a runner-up finish in the 102nd running of the 500-mile classic. Of Carpenter’s 15 Indianapolis 500 starts, last year’s second place was the highest of his career.

All three Ed Carpenter Racing drivers will participate in a test at the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. It will mark the first time Carpenter will be behind the wheel of the No. 20 Preferred Freezer Services Chevrolet. Pigot will remain in his No. 21 while Jones will shift over to ECR’s third Indianapolis 500 entry in conjunction with Scuderia Corsa. Jones will race the blue and white PFS livery in the INDYCAR Grand Prix on May 11, 2019, after which Carpenter will take over the No. 20 for the remainder of May. Practice for the Indianapolis 500 begins May 14 with the 103rd Running set to take place on Sunday, May 26, 2019.
Preferred Freezer Services will back one of Ed Carpenter Racing’s Indianapolis 500 entries for the 6th consecutive year, but with team owner Ed Carpenter behind the wheel in 2019. The three-time Indianapolis 500 pole sitter will drive the blue and white No. 20 Preferred Freezer Services Chevrolet for the first time at a test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Wednesday, April 24.
