GibbsCAM 2010 to be Demonstrated at WESTEC 2010

Includes New Plunge Roughing, Additions to 5-axis and Advanced 3D Machining, Plus 64-bit Implementation

MOORPARK, CA – March 1, 2010 – Gibbs and Associates, developer of GibbsCAM® software for maximizing programming efficiency of CNC machine tools and a Cimatron company, announced today that it will be demonstrating GibbsCAM 2010 during the WESTEC 2010 show at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California from March 23-25, 2010 in booth #2236.  This new release includes multiple new features, additions, enhancements, and productivity tools.  

“We have been working very hard to provide customers new functionality across the GibbsCAM product family,” says Bill Gibbs, founder and president of Gibbs and Associates. “We added many capabilities to make programming and machining easier and more efficient, especially with new features in 5-axis and solids machining. We also implemented 64-bit operation to enable faster processing of long programs and complex parts, added support for new tools and tool holders, extended functionality within various modules, and extended and updated interoperability with various CAD systems,” he adds. “All this is in addition to the recent integration of VoluMillTM and making GibbsCAM compatible with the Windows® 7 operating system.”


Key GibbsCAM 5-axis Enhancements

These include more spiral machining options, new gouge check projection options, a new lead in/lead out “flip” option, a new axial shift damp option for trimming applications, and support for countersink and keyway cutters. More specific additions are the following.

Geometry Creation – A Surface Tools plug-in has been added to create surfaces for repairing or improving machinability of surfaces from solids.

Adaptive Cuts – This new option enables regulating the distance between paths based upon the angle of the surface to be machined to provide a consistent surface finish, regardless of surface angle.

Impeller Roughing – Has been enhanced with functionality that covers more contingencies, especially useful when roughing near and around splitter blades.

Tool Retraction – A new option, Retract Through Tube Center, enables retracting cutting tools from angled pockets while avoiding walls, especially useful for machining cylinder head ports and similar geometry.

Key Enhancements to Solids Machining

New, More Capable Plunge Roughing – No longer a plug-in, it is a tile in the CAM palette, with the ability to calculate material removal strategies that accommodate carbide-inserted drills, which require special motion for no-drag retractions, while avoiding collision in tight or narrow areas.

Enhancements to Advanced 3D Machining – These include the addition of Hit Flats with specified tools for Pocketing, the ability to specify flatness tolerance in Flats Cut to ensure all desired “flat” areas are machined, locking high feed rate for Shortest Route and Minimal Vertical retract styles, addition of Trim to Ramp Advance as a Contour option for waterline cuts, specifying surface finish with step-over distance or scallop height parameters, and using Stock Bounding Box as an additional machining boundary.

Addition of Option for Stock – Facet bodies, generated from a previous machining process, or brought in through a data file, can now be used as initial stock in solid pocketing.

64-bit Implementation

A significant development, the 64-bit implementation allows taking advantage of the more powerful, multi-processor PCs equipped with 4GB or more of RAM. This provides tighter interoperability with 64-bit CAD systems that are co-resident with GibbsCAM on a PC. Also, 64-bit operation reduces computation time when processing extremely long programs or working with complex geometry. It will also enable users to take advantage of system enhancements when running under the Windows 7 operating system.

Even More Enhancements

GibbsCAM 2010 includes many more features, some for ease of use, and others to extend functionality, including enhancements to the user interface and for the Milling, MTM (multi-task machining) and Wire EDM modules, as well as new add-ins for data exchange to support Inventor 2010, SolidWorks 2010, and additional CAD file import and translation. Furthermore, the Macros menu was enhanced with changes for easy access, uninterrupted operation, and support for 5-axis and Advanced 3D processes and calls to plug-ins.

Planit appoints Ambo Technologies as new Radan Reseller

AWEA Supply Chain Manager to Explore Renewable, Wind Energy at WESTEC, March 23-25, in Los Angeles

DEARBORN, Mich. March 2, 2010 – Energy is Matt Garran’s forte. People of the PMPA Management Update

Just a few of the people we caught up with at the Precision Machined Products Association Management Update over the weekend in sunny Scottsdale Arizona.

Albert Thuro of Thuro Metal Products instructed Noah Graff that he needs to find a wife soon or he’ll be relegated to “leftovers.” Romas Juodvalkis of Allways Precision talked about being electrocuted and surviving as a 20-year-old repairman at R.J. Frisby in Chicago. Dan Hankla of Alger Manufacturing, Ontario, California, has an ongoing tug of war with the state’s OSHA equivalent over degreasing processes. Dave Knuepfer of Dupage Machine Parts, who never seems to gain any weight, is finding success hiring local high school kids as interns to get new blood in the shop. Brian Adams of R.F. Mau Co. dropped 35 pounds and showed off his waist looking “maaaavelous.” Jack Steuby of John J. Steuby Co. Screw Machine Products looked himself, and is still trying to make up his mind about making can openers. Say it ain’t so, Jack.

Ron Bracalente of Bracalente Manufacturing Group in Trumbauersville, Penn., is exporting product to China which then goes to Poland. Mark Fordyce of Component Bar Products, O’Fallon, Missouri, talked of competing with Hydromat on spares while being a local supplier. Jeff Ohlemacher of EMC Precision in Elyria, Ohio, told members about having to exert social pressure on Barack Obama to wear safety glasses when the president visited his shop several months ago. Aaron Bagshaw of 140-year-old W.H. Bagshaw Company of Nashua, New Hampshire, was enjoying Phoenix with his wife and two kids. He and his wife are pleased lately about picking up five Nomura Swisses for 23 grand.

Lots of metal guys came but the only machine tool reps were Jim Trunk of Schutte, Jeff Reinert of INDEX, Olaf Tessarzyk of ZPS, and Luca Lanzetta of Pietro Cucchi America.

It was a better turnout than last year in Tampa with 98 companies represented to last year’s 92. It was a serious group. The U.S. vs. Canada gold medal hockey game drained only a few from the presentation of sales guru Jack Daly on Sunday.

The National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA), the Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) and the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) announce the 2010 NTMA/PMA Contract Manufacturing Purchasing Fair: Re-Shoring to Bring U.S. Manufacturing Jobs Back Home. With one stop, OEMs can find competitive U.S. job shops. The Re-Shoring Purchasing Fair will be held on May 12, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Irvine Hotel, Irvine, CA.
The White House and Congress seem to announce each week a new plan to “Save U.S. jobs, especially manufacturing jobs.” Re-shoring, also called “back-shoring” and “on-shoring,” is a non-protectionist, private sector-driven way to reduce imports (and our trade deficit), increase our “net exports” and create jobs. Re-shoring means bringing lost manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. by uniting large manufacturers with competitive domestic suppliers. Going local can reduce a company’s total costs and offer a host of other benefits, while bringing U.S. manufacturing jobs back home. The NTMA and PMA re-shoring initiative will document to large manufacturers nationwide the benefits of sourcing in the United States. The highlight of the re-shoring campaign is the first-ever “Re-Shoring Fair” which builds on the 50 successful domestically focused Fairs held by NTMA over the last 25 years. It will provide a one-stop for larger U.S. manufacturers (OEMs) to find competitive U.S. job shops to manufacture parts and tooling. More than 50 representatives from large manufacturers are expected to attend and learn about competitive domestic sourcing opportunities from 200 top custom U.S. manufacturers. The Fair is intended to change the sourcing paradigm from “Off-shored is cheaper” to “Local reduces Total Cost of Ownership” and will focus on machined, stamped and fabricated parts, special tooling (dies, molds, jigs, fixtures and gauges) and special machines. Work now being produced domestically is also welcome. The government and media have focused almost exclusively on increasing exports. This initiative, instead, helps U.S. companies take the home field advantage, since they can be much more competitive in the U.S. vs. imports than trying to export to other countries. The move to re-shore production has grown increasingly popular in the U.S. in the face of higher transportation and fuel costs, higher wage rates and reject rates in developing countries. Today, large manufacturers re-shore to:

  • Reduce pipeline and surge inventory impacts on JIT operations;
  • Improve the quality and consistency of inputs;
  • Localize manufacturing operations near R&D facilities, strengthening innovation;
  • Reduce IP and regulatory compliance risk; and

Abanaki Oil Grabber Oil Skimmer Provides Lowest-Cost Method for Removing Grease and Oil from Food Processing Wastewater

CLEVELAND, Ohio — February 23Abanaki Corporation offers the Oil Grabber® Model 8 oil skimmer for the food processing industry where plant maintenance engineers are looking for the lowest cost, most reliable method of removing food greases and oils from the wastewater stream. Abanaki skimmers use the differences in specific gravity and surface tension between oil and water, allowing the belt to attract frying oils, vegetable oils, greases, and animal fats as the belt passes through the surface of the water. The simple belt-and-motor approach is proven to operate unattended and reliably for decades with little maintenance.

To avoid fines from government and municipal sewer districts, food processing plants must limit the amount of oils discharged into the environment. Oils and greases entering a plant’s wastewater stream in the process line or during sanitary washdowns, must be removed continuously. The Model 8 oil skimmer provides a continuously operating belt and wiper that can remove up to 40 gallons per hour of oil and grease from water and water-based solutions. Depending on the characteristics of the liquid, the Model 8 oil skimmer is capable of reducing oil content to fewer than five parts-per-million in water. Another benefit of using an Abanaki oil skimmer comes from the recaptured greases and oils, which can be used to manufacture other products such as pet food.

Using an upper and lower pulley system, the oil skimmer belt runs through contaminated liquid to pick up oil from the surface. The belt travels over the head pulley and then passes through tandem wiper blades, from which oil is scraped off both sides and discharged. The tail pulley features flanges that allow the pulley to roll freely on the inside of the belt without becoming dislodged in turbulent applications. No bearings are needed; the unit does not need to be fastened to the tank. An optional tether and cage assembly is offered to prevent the tail pulley from being dislodged.
