LATROBE, Pa., March 1, 2011 – Kennametal Inc. (NYSE: KMT) has announced that its revolutionary Beyond Blast metal cutting technology has been honored with a 2011 Carnegie ScienceCenter Award in the category of Advanced Manufacturing. The Carnegie Science Center established the awards program in 1997 to recognize and promote outstanding science and technology achievements in Western Pennsylvania. With this year’s award, Kennametal and its employees havebeen honored nine times in the program’s 15 years.
Beyond Blast represents a significant advance for Kennametal customers, delivering, in some cases,as much as a 300 percent improvement in productivity. By channeling coolant through the insert,Beyond Blast delivers the coolant not merely in the general area of the cutting zone, but directly to thejuncture where the tool edge meets the material. This breakthrough ensures longer tool life, bettercutting performance and chip control, and more efficient coolant delivery, heat transfer and lubricity. In addition to improving part-production processes, the innovative Beyond Blast technology decreasespower consumption and improves coolant management, thereby mitigating a manufacturer’s impact on the environment.
Because of its value in the manufacturing process and benefit to the planet, Beyond Blast demonstrates how innovative thinking can meet the dual objectives of increased productivity and decreased environmental impact.
“Without question, Beyond Blast represents a revolutionary moment in the history of manufacturing, and we are thrilled to receive the Advanced Manufacturing Award in honor of our commitment to innovation,” said Kennametal Chairman, President and CEO Carlos Cardoso. “At Kennametal, we have a long history of delivering value through innovation, and Beyond Blast will benefit our customers in that same tradition.”
